Myanmar’s Union Election Commission (UEC) has
disqualified a minority party in Rakhine State as it could not follow the
necessary regulations.
Mro National Party (MNP) became the first Rakhine
party to face the restriction among the parties from Rakhine State which were
allowed to get registered with the UEC.
The media outlets
run by the military
council reported that the UEC had officially dissolved the party on 22
November.
A person close to the MNP informed Narinjara News that
the UEC put many guidelines for the political parties. Among those one was to
open party offices in five townships.
The MNP leaders
appealed to the election authority to ignore the criterias, as they couldn't
follow the directions.
The minority party was
supposed to open offices in five townships namely Maungdaw, Pona Kyunt,
Buthidaung, Kyauk Taw and Sittwe.
The UEC in a statement
revealed that following the appeal from the MNP’s central executive committee,
it held a meeting on 22 November and decided to cancel its registration in
accordance with the article 19 subsection (a) of the Political Parties
Registration Act.
The Rakhine/Arakan Front Party, Mro Ethnic Development
Party, Khami National Development Party and Rakhine State National Power Party
were registered by the concerned authority.
Popular Rakhine political party named Arakan National
Party is yet to get registered by the UEC.
