Justice for Myanmar (JFM), an
influential human rights group, urged Tasaki company limited to cease all
operations in Myanmar, said a statement issued on Monday.
JFM stated that Tasaki, a Japanese
company cooperating with the Myanmar military regime in the pearl industry,
continues to collaborate with the Myanmar Pearl Enterprise (MPE) which faces
sanctions by the United States, UK and Canada.
So the JFM
calls on Tasaki and its investors to responsibly end all business ties
with the military junta and respect human rights.
Moreover, it asked the Japanese
company to disclose all of its transactions with MPE and other junta-controlled
entities starting from 1 February 2021.
The
military junta benefits significantly from the revenues generated through the
pearl industry including through a production sharing agreement where MPE
receives 20-25% of the harvested pearls.
According
to the JFM, the junta is benefited by the customs duty and other taxes.
Moreover, the transfer of technology that enhances the production also
benefits the junta.
