Three National League for Democracy (NLD) members, including two from Gwa township of Rakhine State, were released from Insein prison after completion of their jail terms.

Rakhine State’s NLD vice-chairman U Soe Lay, Rakhine NLD youth works member Ko Hein Min Thant and former NLD representative to National Hluttaw and the chairman of NLD’s peasant affairs committee U Ba Myo Thein were released on Friday in the morning hours.

I heard that they were released as they have already completed their jail terms.  At this moment, I have no more details,” said an individual close to them.

Narinjara News tried to contact Soe Lay, a former National Hluttaw representative from Gwa and member of National Hluttaw's peasant affairs committee, by his cellphone, but failed.

They all were arrested from Shwegontai NLD headquarter in May 2021 after the military coup in Myanmar.

Next year, they were sentenced to three years in prison under section 17 (1) of the Unlawful Association Act.

No less than 25,369 people were arrested (out of them 5,724 are released) by the military junta soon after the coup. According to the Association for Assistance of Political Prisoners (AAPP), 163 individuals have been sentenced to capital punishment by the junta courts.
