SIttwe, 1 September 2018
The Sittwe District Court will make a decision on whether or not it should press charges against Dr Aye Maung and writer Wai Hin Aung on September 10, their lawyers said.
“The verdict will be set down on September 10. The judge will decide on whether charges should be pressed against them. They can be set free if the judge accepts our argument and decides not to press charges,” said Dr Aye Maung’s lawyer U Aung Kyaw Sein.
He told this to the media after the court hearing on August 27.
During the court hearing on August 27, the lawyers argued that Dr Aye Maung and writer Wai Hin Aung did not breach the law in their talks given at Rathedaung Literary Talks so charges should not be pressed against them.
“I believe I will be set free without charges being pressed [against me] on September 10. I’m saying this because I believe in the judiciary pillar,” said Dr Aye Maung.
The Rakhine State government has filed three charges including high treason against Pyithu Hluttaw MP Dr Aye Maung from Ann Constituency and writer Wai Hin Aung on claim of using words that offend the State during the literary talk held in Rathedaung, Rakhine State on January 15 to mark the fall of the Rakhine sovereignty.
