Bus accident in Arakan kills 14 and wounds 33

Taungup: 14 people were killed and 33 others injured in a bus accident that took place on a mountain road near Taungup in southeastern Arakan State.

Aung Thitsar Bus that was driving from Yangon to Thandwe fell from Arakan Roma mountain road and overturned near Nayputaung moutain located 7 miles away from Taungup around 3:30 am on Wednesday due to brake failure, a local resident Ko Min Aung told Narinjara.

Among the dead victims , 7 are male , 6 female and one child. During the accident, there were over 40 passengers on the car.

33 including three monks were injured and hospitalized in Taungup hospital.

The victims with serious injuries are said to have been evacuated to the hospital in Thandwe while some of those with minor injuries to the hospital in Taungup.

Road accidents are common in western Burma’s Arakan State because of the poor roads and old buses.
Police in Taungup station confirmed the incident but declined to provide details for the accident.

Eight people including women and children were killed and several others injured in a similar accident last June on the same road.
