A major fire broke out in two Muslim villages of Maungdaw township on March 10 that gutted nearly 103 houses.

According to the Maungdaw township police the incident took place at around 1 pm in Sinthee Pyin village and Paungmyung village. The fire was extinguished by 5:30 pm after it damages the properties belonged to the local people.

The local villagers alleged that the fire was ignited by some people from a nearest village on the bank of a creek. “It was easier to flash from the other village as the distance between the two villages was very smaller,” argued a village local.

It may be mentioned that burning of village huts in some days becomes a regular event in Arakan. Days back, another incident of fire devastated Ducheeyartan (Alay Wra)  village, where a mosque and 12 houses were burnt down. The incident took place on the early morning of March 9.

Prior to the incident, 36 houses were gutted by fire in Darpaing Muslim village under Sittwe township on March 8.
