An overloaded boat carrying more than 80 passengers
from Kyauk Kar village in Palaw township under Tanintharyi region to
Myeik city sank in the sea on 20 October at around 9:30 pm. Till now
20 bodies have been recovered and most of the passengers went
missing.
"The rescuers are searching for those missing
passengers. They included students and also internally displaced people, "
said a local resident.
The villagers from Kyauk Kar are also searching
for the missing individuals.
Many passengers of the ill-fated boat were traveling
to Thailand. But the students were returning home enjoying Thadingyut holidays.
The boat sank due to overloads, added the resident.
This vessel was regularly departing Kyauk Kar village
for Myeik city at around 9 pm. Most of the residents from Kyauk Kar and
nearby areas usually travel by boat.
