According to military chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit on March 22 resulted in 144 fatalities and 732 injuries in Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, and Sagaing.
During a military council briefing regarding the earthquake and its impact, the military chief stated that Nay Pyi Taw was the most severely affected area. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing stated that 96 individuals lost their lives in Nay Pyi Taw, 18 in Sagaing, and 30 in Sagaing, resulting in a total of 144 fatalities.
In Nay Pyi Taw, 132 individuals sustained injuries, while 300 were hurt in Sagaing and 732 in Kyaukse, with the number of fatalities and injuries likely to increase.
He stated that he had personally examined the damage and was ready to accept international aid. A powerful earthquake registering 7.7 on the Richter scale hit at 12:51 pm today, approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Mandalay. Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, Bago Division, and the northeastern part of Shan State experienced the greatest impact.
Nevertheless, the damage report provided by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing excluded northeastern Shan State and Bago Division.
The military council announced a state of emergency in these regions at noon today, citing the Natural Disaster Management Law.
