In Gyin Dway village, Pauktaw Township, Arakan State, an explosion resulted in the deaths of two individuals who were handling an unexploded bomb. Another individual, who sustained severe injuries, subsequently passed away while undergoing treatment.

The individual who died was 15-year-old Maung Nyein Soe Lin from the village, who died on February 13.

A community member stated, "He passed away during urgent medical care. He sustained severe injuries in the blast, with shrapnel from the explosion striking his left leg.”

The blast took place at approximately 3:00 pm on February 12, when 17-year-old Maung Min Soe Tun from the village, alongside his friends, handled a leftover bomb he had gathered from Sun Ye village in Minbya Township.

In the blast, 20-year-old Ko Nay Myo Win (also referred to as Chet Chey) and 18-year-old Ko Ko Naing from Gyin Dway village were hit by shrapnel and perished instantly.

Along with Maung Nyein Soe Lin, 15-year-old Maung Hein Soe Naing, 17-year-old Maung Min Soe Tun, and 20-year-old Ma Myat Aye Khaing sustained injuries as well.

Among them, Maung Nyein Soe Lin passed away while undergoing medical care.

In townships throughout Arakan State, where fierce clashes have taken place, a number of explosions resulted from meddling with leftover bombs in January and February of this year.

These events have resulted in a rise in the count of fatalities and injuries among both youth and adults, with some children also affected.

Consequently, local community members are requesting educational programs regarding the risks associated with explosive remnants of war and landmines.

In the meantime, the Arakan Army (AA) is diligently engaged in landmine clearance, promoting awareness, distributing safety pamphlets, and installing warning signs in regions it governs.
