A landmine explosion in Shwe Zar Gone Nar (Muslim) village, Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, resulted in serious injuries to three individuals, one of whom is a 2-year-old child.
The injured individuals are 30-year-old Manul Qaeda, daughter of U Dil Mahmud; her sibling Ko Kyaw Myint Naing (also referred to as Mahmud Sorleim); and 2-year-old Ma Shahal Ahta, daughter of U Anar Zul Haud.
The blast happened at approximately 3:40 pm on February 6 when Manul Qaeda stepped on a landmine placed by junta forces at the rear entry of her house while she was going to get water. The explosion resulted in the amputation of her right leg.
Ko Kyaw Myint Naing and Ma Shahal Ahta, who were close by, also sustained injuries from the blast.
Landmines and explosive remnants from conflict persist in causing injuries in Arakan State.
On that same day, at approximately 3:00 pm in Taungup Town, Daw Khin Myo Chey triggered a landmine while gathering firewood close to the 346th Light Infantry Battalion, where junta troops were located. The blast led to the loss of her left leg and serious wounds to her right leg. She is presently undergoing medical care.
In a separate event, a Muslim child and a Muslim young man both lost a leg after trodding on landmines deployed by junta forces in their residence in Shwe Zar Gone Nar (Muslim) village, Maungdaw Township, on January 29 and February 5.
On February 3, a leftover bomb detonated while individuals were playing in Gwa Township, resulting in the deaths of three people, including a 5-year-old child, and wounding three more.
On January 22, Daw Phyu Ma Chey (38) from Aung Mingalar Ward, Mrauk-U Township, lost her life after stepping on a landmine while gathering firewood close to the 377th and 378th Light Infantry Battalions, where junta troops were positioned.
Likewise, on January 18, a kid from Kin Pon Village close to Kan Thar Yar Beach in Gwa Township passed away after playing with an unexploded bomb.
