On January 20, the Burmese Women's Union (BWU) announced that 83 women were killed in Arakan State, while 478 women died throughout Myanmar due to the armed conflict in 2024.
In 2024, there were 109 fatalities among women in Sagaing Region, 92 in Shan State, and 83 in Arakan State.
The BWU observed that Sagaing Region had the most women fatalities, with Shan State and Arakan State following.
The statement indicates that the 478 women who were killed nationwide suffered from different types of violence. Of these, 142 women were killed as a result of military shelling aimed at civilian homes and villages, 257 lost their lives in military air raids, 66 were murdered by the military without justification, 7 died from landmine explosions, 1 was executed by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), and 6 women died due to conflict-related sexual violence.
Moreover, 412 women suffered injuries in 2024. Among these, 152 individuals sustained injuries from military artillery bombardment, 191 were hurt during military air attacks, 42 were affected by landmines, 10 were injured in extrajudicial killings, 12 experienced physical harm due to conflict-related sexual violence, and 5 women underwent torture in detention facilities.
Over the almost four years following the military's failed coup on February 1, 2021, the military has consistently perpetrated grave human rights abuses, encompassing war crimes and crimes against humanity, resulting in the daily deaths of women from sexual violence and various other forms of abuse, the BWU reported.
