Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun will remain as Myanmar's delegate at the United Nations.
The Credentials Committee of the United Nations presented a proposal to the General Assembly concerning Myanmar's representation, which the Assembly accepted without a vote.
On December 6, 2024, the Credentials Committee submitted the "Credentials of Representatives of Myanmar and Afghanistan" to the 79th Session of the General Assembly. The General Assembly approved the proposal without a vote, indicating that "the proposal will be taken up at the next General Assembly."
Consequently, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun is permitted to continue serving as Myanmar's envoy to the UN.
Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun has served as Myanmar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations since the time of the NLD government.
Following the military takeover in February 2021, he advocated for the citizens of Myanmar and resisted the military government.
On February 26, 2021, during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, he raised three fingers in opposition to the coup junta and gave a speech representing the NLD government.
The next day, February 27, 2021, the junta declared that Kyaw Moe Tun had been removed for treason against the nation and representing an unlawful organization.
The junta additionally suggested acknowledging their representative as Myanmar's envoy; however, the UN did not recognize the junta as the rightful representative of Myanmar. Consequently, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun remains in his position as Myanmar's ambassador to the UN.
The authority to represent Myanmar is open to assessment and choice by the Credentials Committee.
