On November 28, the spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, remarked that Myanmar, being a non-member state, falls outside the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Mao also stressed the importance of China closely monitoring the situation in Arakan State.
" Under the Statute, the Court has no jurisdiction over acts committed by nationals of non-State Parties on the territory of a non-State Party, unless referred to it by the UN Security Council," Mao Ning stated.
Mao responded to an inquiry from an AFP journalist during a routine press briefing.
Furthermore, Mao emphasized that China is closely monitoring the situation in Arakan State and is prepared to cooperate with the global community to assist in stabilizing the region and reducing the current conflict.
“The complexity of the situation in Arakan State is due to various historical, ethnic, and religious factors, necessitating a thorough and comprehensive resolution approach. China closely watches what is happening in Arakan State as it is a neighboring country to Myanmar," she mentioned.
“China is prepared to cooperate with the global community to contribute positively to stabilizing and de-escalating the situation,” Mao also stated.
She responded to an AFP query: “The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court had requested an arrest warrant for Myanmar's junta chief on November 27 for allegedly committing crimes against humanity towards Rohingya Muslims. Can China provide a comment on this?”
