The UK government suggested avoiding travel to certain regions in Myanmar, such as Arakan ( Rakhine) State, on November 16, citing persistent internal conflicts.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has revised its travel guidance due to the ongoing internal conflict between the military junta and ethnic armed organizations.
The advisory mentions that Myanmar authorities have limited entry to many border regions, with ongoing military actions like airstrikes, artillery attacks, and ground troop advancements.
Travel should be avoided in several areas of Myanmar, including Arakan State, Mon State, Kachin State, Chin State, Kayah State, Kayin State, Sagaing Region, Magway Region, Tanintharyi Region (excluding Myeik Township and the archipelago and townships south of Tanintharyi Township), northern Shan State, northern Mandalay Region (including the townships north of Mandalay City and Pyin Oo Lwin), and areas east of the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway in Bago Region.
Even though the FCDO no longer recommends avoiding all non-essential travel to Yangon Region, there is still an increased level of danger. The security situation in Yangon is unstable and can quickly shift. The FCDO has specifically cautioned against traveling to areas under martial law, such as Shwe Pyi Thar, Hlaing Tha Yar (West), Hlaing Tha Yar (East), North Okkalapa, Dagon Myothit (North), Dagon Myothit (South), and Dagon Myothit (Seikkan).
Security events in Myanmar are still being directed towards members of the armed forces.
Similar incidents are also happening in Yangon, which can have consequences on civilians and onlookers, especially in popular spots for foreign visitors like hotels, eateries, and housing facilities. Military bases, along with security checkpoints, are also vulnerable to attacks.
Yangon currently has a curfew from 1:00 am to 3:00 am.
The FCDO recommends having a passport with a visa when passing through police or military checkpoints during necessary travel in Myanmar. Travelers should also take note that the majority of personnel at these checkpoints, even in urban areas, do not have proficiency in English.
