According to a report by The Daily Star inDhaka, on Wednesday, the Myanmar Junta Navy opened fire on Bangladeshi fishingboats in the Bay of Bengal near St. Martin's Island, killing one fisherman andinjuring two more.
According to the report, junta authorities notonly killed but also arrested at least forty fishermen and then turned themover to the Bangladesh Coast Guard.
The incident happened close to St. Martinisland in Bangladesh, according to Adnan Chowdhury, Township AdministrativeOfficer (UNO) of Teknaf Upazila in Cox's Bazar, a district in the southernmostportion of the country near Myanmar.
He said this afternoon that the BangladeshCoast Guard is transporting the fishermen to Teknaf.
As they get to Teknaf, information regardingthe event will become available, he stated.
Five fishermen were fishing in the Naf River onMonday when they were kidnapped by the Arakan Army, a rebel group from Myanmar.On October 9, AA turned them over to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The eight months of intense warfare in theRakhine State between the Arakan Army and the Myanmar government troops hasleft the neighboring areas with Myanmar in a state of chaos. The majority ofthe territory, including Maungdaw Township, has been taken over by the ArakanArmy, with the exception of the border police headquarters Nakaka (5) on theBangladeshi border.
