According to a report by The Daily Star in
Dhaka, on Wednesday, the Myanmar Junta Navy opened fire on Bangladeshi fishing
boats in the Bay of Bengal near St. Martin's Island, killing one fisherman and
injuring two more.
According to the report, junta authorities not
only killed but also arrested at least forty fishermen and then turned them
over to the Bangladesh Coast Guard.
The incident happened close to St. Martin
island in Bangladesh, according to Adnan Chowdhury, Township Administrative
Officer (UNO) of Teknaf Upazila in Cox's Bazar, a district in the southernmost
portion of the country near Myanmar.
He said this afternoon that the Bangladesh
Coast Guard is transporting the fishermen to Teknaf.
As they get to Teknaf, information regarding
the event will become available, he stated.
Five fishermen were fishing in the Naf River on
Monday when they were kidnapped by the Arakan Army, a rebel group from Myanmar.
On October 9, AA turned them over to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The eight months of intense warfare in the
Rakhine State between the Arakan Army and the Myanmar government troops has
left the neighboring areas with Myanmar in a state of chaos. The majority of
the territory, including Maungdaw Township, has been taken over by the Arakan
Army, with the exception of the border police headquarters Nakaka (5) on the
Bangladeshi border.
