Thinzar Nwe, Narinjara News, 8 October 2024

Wet Inn Nagar mud volcano erupted near Saing Chon village under  Kyaukphyu township of Arakan State spewing lava to nearly 300 feet.

The eruption  started at around 11 am on 5 October and lasted for about half an hour.

The hot mud shot up to a height of approximately 10 feet, while lava spread over a distance of about 300 feet around the volcano.

Despite the eruption, there was no casualty and damage to the properties.

“The volcano is close  to Dhanyawadi naval base. Since the area is a military zone with landmines, no one ventures into it,” said Ko Aung Aung, a resident of Kyaukphyu.

Wet Inn Nagar mud volcano is one of the four active volcanoes and the northernmost one erupted this time.

The last eruption from this volcano took place on 5 November 2023 marking a total of six eruptions between 2016 and 2024.

In addition to this  group, there are two mud volcano groups namely Pan Shay Nagar and Tha Pyay Taw Nagar near Saing Chon village.

Pan Shay Nagar and Wet Inn Nagar groups remain most active with eruptions from time to time.

The mud volcanoes usually rise approximately 50 to 60 meters above the sea level. The recent eruption was caused by a combination of tectonic activity and  buildup of underground gasses. ( File photo)
