NLD Vice Chairman and Mandalay Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung Passes Away

Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, the Chief Minister of the Mandalay Region and Vice Chairman of the National League for Democracy (NLD), passed suddenly on October 7 at three in the morning, as confirmed by his wife, Dr. Yu Yu May.

 

 He passed away at the Mandalay General Hospital.

 

Dr. Yu Yu May announced her husband's departure on Facebook, writing, "After being alive and apart, he has now left us forever." 3 am on October 7.

 

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Mandalay General Hospital was treating Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, who had been battling leukemia.

 

He was unconscious and had been on oxygen since October 5, but he became cognizant again at approximately 9:30 pm on October 6.

 

"Sayar Zaw has recovered consciousness, but he passed away around 3:00 am today," a family-connected source said.

 

As junta officials arrived at the hospital on October 6, evening, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was receiving treatment and was given amnesty.

 

According to an NLD member, he died less than a day after receiving this pardon.

 

The arrangements for his funeral have not yet been finalized, but his body has been brought to his father's residence in Pyi Gyi Tagon Township.

 

When Dr. Zaw Myint Maung passed away, he was 73 years old.

 

Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was detained and given a 29-year prison sentence on a number of crimes, including corruption and slander, when the junta took over in 2021.

 

In the 1990 multi-party democratic general election, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was first chosen to represent Amarapura Township as a representative of the National League for Democracy (NLD).

 

In the 2012 by-election, he was elected as the representative of the Pyithu Hluttaw for Kyaukpadaung Township.

 

He was elected to the Mandalay Region Parliament from Amarapura Township in the general election of 2015, and he later took office as the region's chief minister.

 

He also held the position of Vice Chairman of the NLD.

 

"Pray together for Arakan State. Love is scarce in Arakan State." Dr. Zaw Myint Maung suggested during the military tensions in Arakan State in 2019.
