World Food Programme (WFP)
announced on 18 September that it will provide a one-month emergency food
supply to 500,000 people affected by the recent wave of flood.
According to the WFP press
release, it will begin distributing emergency food supplies this week to the
areas which are affected by the flood which was caused by Typhoon Yagi.
The one-month ration will include
rice grains, fortified biscuits, nutrition products etc for the flood affected
families to meet an urgent need.
Before Yagi, the WFP provided
emergency assistance to 185,000 flood-affected people in Myanmar during
July and August.
Sheela Mathew, WFP Myanmar
representative, stated that the recent flood was the worst one in Myanmar's
recent history.
“Super Typhoon Yagi caused the
most severe floods in Myanmar’s recent history. Much of the country was
submerged and some areas are witnessing their first flood in decades,"
said the Myanmar WFP representative.
Due to Yagi, which hit Myanmar on
11 September, Karen State, Kayah State, Naypyidaw, Bago region, Magway region,
Mandalay region, Mon State and Shan State experienced heavy rains, severe
flooding and landslides.
“The impact on food security will
be nothing less than devastating. More than 13 million people were already
facing food insecurity in August. Our teams are working to respond to the
growing needs,” she added.
