The 85th anniversary ofSayadaw U Ottama, a celebrated independence hero of Myanmar, was observed on 9September in Thailand, Malaysia and South Korea.
The commemoration wasconducted on Sunday by the Arakanese communities living in these countries.
In South Korea, the ArakanAssociation-Korea organized the event at Dharma Yarna Sasana Rakhita monasteryin Incheon. Approximately 30 people attended the commemoration in the country.
“Sayadaw U Ottama wasa remarkable personality who placed the common good above his own interest.When the people of Myanmar were too fearful to oppose British rule, Sayadaw UOttama boldly preached political and revolutionary ideas. He laid the foundationfor Myanmar's independence and extended his influence across Asia. Hisextraordinary contributions earned him the title ‘Sun of Asia.’ We hold thisceremony to honor and remember such an admirable person among the Arakanese,”said Ko Aung Lwin, president of Arakan Association-Korea.
Similar ceremonieswere organized in Johor in southern Malaysia and Maha ChulalongkornUniversity in Thailand and also another venue and each function drew hundredsof Arakanese nationals.
Hailing from Sittwe, SayadawU Ottama played a crucial role in Myanmar's freedom struggle and the Arakanesemonk was one of the first individuals to plant the political seeds for thenation’s liberation from British colonial rule.
Additionally, he was thefirst monk in Myanmar to be imprisoned for political activities.
After his initial release,he was imprisoned three more times for delivering political speeches across thecountry.
Sayadaw U Ottama died fromdiabetes on 9 September 1939 at Nyaungdon monastery in Pazundaung township ofYangon, theformer capital of Myanmar.
The Arakanese people observeSayadaw U Ottama’s passing as Sayadaw U Ottama Day with various programsto honor the great son of the soil.
Due to the militaryconflicts in Arakan State, Sayadaw U Ottama Day commemorations were not organised in the Rakhine region in 2023 and 2024.
