The United Nations Office for the Coordinationof Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has released a statement on August 19,highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance for 18.6 millionpeople in Myanmar, including 6 million children.
Due to worsening conflicts and severe naturaldisasters across the country, an estimated 18.6 million people, including 6million children, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, according to astatement by UNOCHA's Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator a.i. for Myanmar onWorld Humanitarian Day, August 19.
UNOCHA reported that aid workers are workingtirelessly to provide food, shelter, protection, and other life-savingassistance to those in need. In the first half of 2024, humanitarian effortsreached 2.1 million people with support.
World Humanitarian Day is a time to recognizeand honor the brave aid workers who are delivering vital assistance to millionsin need throughout Myanmar. Despite the expanding crisis, these workerscontinue to ensure that help reaches those who need it most, the statement said.
The statement also stated the daily risks facedby both civilians and aid workers due to the ongoing conflict in Myanmar. It iscrucial that all parties involved in the conflict adhere to InternationalHumanitarian Law, which requires them to protect civilians and aid workers andensure continuous and unobstructed humanitarian access.
The ongoing efforts of those working to assistthe most vulnerable populations in Myanmar are deeply valued. Despite thesignificant challenges, their dedication brings hope for reducing suffering andsafeguarding lives, the statement said.
