The Arakan Army (AA) members successfully rescued 372prisoners from Thandwe jail and also sent 41 political prisoners to theirfamilies.
An AA statement issued 8 August said that the transferringof prisoners began on 6 August.
After taking control of the junta’s military bases inThandwe, Ngapali (Ma Zin airport) and Thandwe hotel zone on 16 July, theAA fighters rescued those prisoners. There were many political prisonersamong them. Many were jailed for crimes related to theft, robbery, murder, etc.
During the rescue operation, five prisoners were killed byshell shrapnel from the junta forces. Two others died from severeinjuries while undergoing treatment, added the statement.
Two political prisoners also died during the rescueinitiatives. The remaining 41 political prisoners were also sick and theyneeded urgent medical care. They were provided appropriate treatment as well.
The police and administrative officials of the United Leagueof Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA) gathered necessary information and verified theidentities of those political prisoners.
The prisoners who had committed crimes will remain underdetention. Their offenses will be re-examined and addressed through legalprocedures, concluded the AA statement.
