The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on 19 May
expressed serious concern over the ongoing violence in Buthidaung locality of
Rakhine State. UNHCHR Volker Türk also expressed worries over the displacement
of tens of thousands of civilians including Rohingyas.
He added, with inter-communal tensions between
the ethnic Arakanese and Muslim Rohingyas, which are actively stoked by the
military junta, it becomes a critical period with an acute risk of further
atrocity crimes.
"While we seek to corroborate information
indicating serious violations, I appeal directly to the Myanmar military and
Arakha Army to pause the fighting, protect civilians, allow immediate and
unhindered humanitarian access, and comply fully and unconditionally with
international laws including the measures already ordered by the International
Court of Justice for the protection of Rohingyas," he added.
He also appealed to Bangladesh to once again extend
protection to vulnerable people seeking refuge and to the international
community for providing all necessary support.
