The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on 19 Mayexpressed serious concern over the ongoing violence in Buthidaung locality ofRakhine State. UNHCHR Volker Türk also expressed worries over the displacementof tens of thousands of civilians including Rohingyas.
He added, with inter-communal tensions betweenthe ethnic Arakanese and Muslim Rohingyas, which are actively stoked by themilitary junta, it becomes a critical period with an acute risk of furtheratrocity crimes.
"While we seek to corroborate informationindicating serious violations, I appeal directly to the Myanmar military andArakha Army to pause the fighting, protect civilians, allow immediate andunhindered humanitarian access, and comply fully and unconditionally withinternational laws including the measures already ordered by the InternationalCourt of Justice for the protection of Rohingyas," he added.
He also appealed to Bangladesh to once again extendprotection to vulnerable people seeking refuge and to the internationalcommunity for providing all necessary support.
