US Embassy announces additional $50 Million in Humanitarian Assistance

The US Embassy in Yangonannounced on February 16 that it has provided an additional $50 million inhumanitarian assistance  to Myanmar.

 

The statement indicated thatthe assistance will be provided through the United States Agency forInternational Development (USAID) for emergency food and nutrition assistanceas humanitarian assistance due to increased displacements, armed conflict, andgrowing food insecurity in Myanmar.

 

According to a recent overviewof humanitarian needs released by the United Nations, more than 17 millionpeople in Myanmar (about one in three people) are in need of humanitarianassistance. In 2020, the number of people in need of assistance across thecountry did not even reach one million, according to a statement from the USEmbassy.

 

With this new funding, USAIDwill work with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to treat and preventmalnutrition in conflict-affected states, helping more than 750,000 people, theUS Embassy said in a statement.

 

This assistance includesproviding monthly food rations, as well as nutrition commodities for childrenunder five, and pregnant and lactating women.

 

The United States Agency forInternational Development (USAID) continues to provide emergency life-savingassistance to people in need from all over Myanmar, and commends those who areworking peacefully towards an inclusive democratic future for Myanmar.
