Military council releases three arrested civilians in Mrauk U

The military released three arrested civilians from Mrauk-Oo Township in Rakhine State on Friday, it is learnt.

The three are U Maung Kyaw Nyunt, a member of Mrauk-Oo Yadanar Pala Funeral Services Association, U Than Tun, secretary of Nan Yeik Garuna Free Oxygen Assistance Association and his brother Ko Kyaw Than Hlaing.

The latter two are sons of U Thin Kha Kyaw who lives in Wah Zay Ahtet Street in Mrauk-Oo.

Of the three, Ko Than Tun and his brother were freed at their house at 8pm on 7 October (Friday), according to a source close to them.

“They arrived back home at about 8pm last night. They are fine and relaxed. They said they were questioned about Arakan Army. I still do not know much in detail as I still don’t have much time to talk with them,” the source said.

The two brothers were arrested by the military council at 11:30 am on September 25 near Taung Yad Bazaar.  

U Maung Kyaw Nyunt of Yadanapala Funeral Services Association said he was sent back home at 8pm on Friday (7 October).

“I got back home at 8pm. They sent me back by car. I was asked about the funeral service matters. I was told to stay away from politics. I was blindfolded when they arrested me, when they questioned me and also on the way back to my place,” he said.

The military council arrested him at 6:30am on 6 October at his house in Letkaut Zay Ward in Mrauk-Oo town.

From October 1 to 8, the military council had detained altogether 14 local people from Mrauk-Oo, Kyauktaw, Taunggup and Minbya townships in Rakhine State, it is learnt. NN-12
