A car was reportedly shot at and hit by small arms fire last night, injuring the driver and his assistant in Maungdaw Township on the western border of Rakhine State.
Both the men who were injured are residents of Ka Ye Myaing (NaTaLa) village, Du Chi Yadan Village Tract in Maungdaw. The driver is U Aung Myo Than, 30, and the car assistant is Maung Than Win, 36.
Maungdaw District Administrator U Soe Aung confirmed what had happened.
"They were shot at from the bushes," he said. “It is really far from the police station so it is not yet known who fired the shots. The relevant security forces are still investigating. The security situation changes, when it’s good, it’s good. This has happened and it is not good,” the administrator said.
They had rented a car to go to Inn Din village and were returning at around 7:15 pm. Five shots were fired from a bush on the right side of the road as they approached Myin Lut and Myaw Chaung quarters, he said.
The driver, Aung Myo Than, was reportedly shot once in the right thigh, while Maung Than Win was hit in the left leg by broken glass.
Both men were not seriously injured but were taken to Maungdaw People's Hospital. The driver has been transferred to Sittwe General Hospital.
