A 20 years old woman from Ain Gyan village under Maebon township of Arakan died in Magwe hospital, almost two weeks after Ma Shwe Khine Kyi was hospitalized with landmine injuries.

“She breathed her last at 5 pm on 19 October. Ma Shwe Khine Kyi was operated and few pieces of mine were removed from her belly. One of her injured legs was even cut under the knee. But health continued deteriorating day by day and finally left for heavenly abode,” said one of her relatives named U Wai Than Myint.

The landmine exploded when she went to the jungle with her husband to pick up mushrooms from a location nearby to her Ain Gyan village on 7 October.  She put one of her legs over the landmine and it exploded,” added her relative.

She was sent to Ann township hospital, but her health condition remained unchanged. Then she was admitted to Magwe hospital, located in central Burma.

Since December, Arakan in western Myanmar has witnessed a dozen deaths in mine injuries. Over 30 civilians have also received injuries.
