The UK government has stated it will keep backing efforts to protect journalists in Myanmar and worldwide.
This announcement came from the British Embassy in Yangon on November 2, marking the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
"We'll continue helping to safeguard journalists and human rights defenders in Myanmar and around the world," the statement said.
The UN recognizes November 2 as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
In its message, the UK also praised Myanmar's brave reporters who keep telling the truth and sharing key information with the public, even when facing threats of unfair arrest, legal action, and severe violence.
The UK government spoke out against any attacks on press freedom and called for action against those who limit or abuse it.
Since Myanmar's 2021 military takeover, journalists have all voiced worry about their lack of safety and fears for their well-being.
U Sein Win, who runs Mizzima News' newsroom, said, "The military rulers only like journalists who write good things about them. If reporters tell the truth, the rulers won't accept it—they'll arrest, jail, and hurt them. They'll do anything to stop criticism and keep power. I see this as the last bit of hope fading away."
The 2024 World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) puts Myanmar among the five most dangerous places for journalists globally.
The index also shows Myanmar is one of 36 countries with the least press freedom, scoring between 40% and 0%.
Athan Myanmar reported in September that 11 male journalists and filmmakers have died from torture by the military rulers in the three-plus years since the takeover.
RSF also noted that 62 journalists have been arrested and jailed since the coup.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) revealed Myanmar has the second-highest number of jailed journalists worldwide.
The National Unity Government (NUG) asked the world community yesterday to speak up against the military rulers' actions, including arresting, torturing, and killing journalists and trying to silence the press.
The NUG also promised to support and honor journalists who report news while risking their lives. (Photo: KIC)
