Mrauk U: Three Arakanese villagers were seriously wounded as they were attacked by a group of Muslim villagers while they were reaping paddies in their fields on the morning of December 23 in Mrauk-U Township in Arakan State.
The victims are identified as U Sein Hla (56), U Thar Tun Sein (54) and Ko Sein Hla Kyaw (19) from Zayarwady Village in Mrauk-U Township.
“About 20 Muslim men armed with iron rods, grub hoe and slingshots from Paungtoke Palaungtaw Village came and suddenly attacked them while they were preparing to eat their meals after reaping paddies in their fields near their Zayyarwady Village around 11 am yesterday. U Sein Hla got his right arm broken in three places, U Thar Tun Sein was wounded on his eye and whole body and Ko Sein Hla Kyaw was also wounded. Around 80 other Muslim villagers followed to the spot and took back the attackers to their village”, said a villager who witnessed the incident.
He said three of them had to be sent to the hospital in Mrauk-U after the attack and among them U Sein Hla was taken to the hospital in Sittwe on 24th of December as his wounds are very serious and cannot be cured in Mrauk-U.
“There are ten soldiers and polices being deployed at Paungtoke Village and it is unbelievable how the Muslims from that village were able to attack the Arakanese villagers amid their tight security”, he said.
It is learnt that the police arrested only two Muslim men from Paungtoke Village in connection with the attack.
According to the Arakanese residents in Mrauk-U Township, the police have been extorting money that ranges from kyat 50,000 to 100,000 per person from the rural villagers with threat of arrest after accusing them of being involved in the communal violence in the area which was took place in October.
They said they believe that the police have not taken any action to the Muslim villagers who personally involved in the attack on Zayyarwady villagers after taking a large sum of money as bribe from those attackers.
