Akyab:  Intending to crackdown on potential monks' demonstrations in Akyab in the future, the government authority forced senior abbots to form a committee in Akyab against the wishes of several senior abbots.

Five senior monks will lead the committee and other abbots at monasteries around Akyab will have to support it. The committee will also have to cooperate with the Rakhine State administration in preventing further demonstrations by monks in Akyab.

Abbot U Tawma from Maniradana monastery has been appointed president and Abbot Sanda from Detkina Rama monastery has been appointed secretary of the committee.

One monk said this is a new plan of the government authority to crackdown on political movements by monks, and is intended to destroy unity among monks in Arakan State.

Five abbots selected from all monasteries in Akyab will have to travel daily to the Baragri Buddhist temple to help town authorities during this current critical period of social unrest, said the monk.

The current situation in Akyab is very tense, and members of riot police regiment number 12 are deploying to key places in Akyab, including Lawkar Nadar temple and Ottama garden.

The commander from riot police regiment 12 has opened a temporary camp in Baragri temple in downtown Akyab so forces can be in ready position to intercept any possible demonstrations in Akyab.#
