Convicted Murders of Ma Thidar Htwe Sentenced to Death

Kyauk Pru: The district court in Kyaukpru in Arakan State has sentenced three men to death for the rape and murder of Ma Thidar Htwe, a young woman from Thapraychaung Village in nearby Rambree Township.

U Ba Shin, a legislator and retired lawyer from Kyaukpru, told Narinjara that they were charged under a similar legal section and sentenced to death at 11:50 am today by the court.

“Two of the accused were produced in court today because one is already dead. The court has sentenced them to death under Seciton 302-1(c) and closed their case,” said U Ba Shin.

He said about 30 people attended the court to witness the hearing on their case.

“There were not so many people and only about 30 people attended to listen to the hearing of the court on their case. There was no reaction or appeal from the side of the accused. It seemed they already knew they would get such punishment,” he said.

One of the accused, 23-year-old Htet Htet, aka Rashi, is said to have committed suicide while he was in custody. The two remaining accused, 18-year-old Rauhi and 21-year-old Luyub, were produced in the district court in Kyaukpru and sentenced to death.

The men were charged with murdering Ma Thidar Htwe after gang-raping her on the evening of 28 May when she was traveling back home to Thapraychaung Village after attending a training in tailoring in Kyuaknimaw Village in Rambree Township.

The court started to hear their case on the 8th of June and continued the case for a second hearing from 11 to 15 of June, with examinations of the accused and witnesses. They were found guilty and sentenced to death after compiling statements from all sides.
