Arakan National Party (ANP), the main political party of Rakhine formed a preparation committee with seven members for the 21st Century Panglong Conference.

The committee was formed on 1 July in Sittwe during the central executive meet of ANP held at its headquarter.

ANP president Dr Aye Maung informed  that the 21st Century Panglong Conference, organized  by government in Naypyidaw, would be important for the people of Arakan.

“We have decided to participate in the 21st Century Panglong Conference. So we formed a preparation for necessary arrangements in view of the conference,” added Dr Aye Maung.

U Hla Soe, ANP’s central executive member and a Parliamentarian is supposed to lead the committee. Few more parliamentary members like U Aung Kyaw Zan, U Pe Than and U Kyaw Zaw Oo are also included in the committee.

The first Panglong Conference was organized on 12 February 1947 in Panglong town of Shan State. It was led by Burma’s independence hero Bogyoke Aung San and ethnic prominent leaders from Shan, Kachin, Chin and Kayar communities.

However no Arakanese leader had the opportunity to attend the conference. Hence the Arakanese leaders decided unanimously not tomiss the forthcoming Panglong meet.

Dr Aye Maung also expressed hope that the crucial meet would be successful with the legitimate support and goodwill from the NLD government and also the Burma Army.
